With the T20 World Cup 2024 coming up following the ongoing season of the Indian Premier League, who gets selected to be part of the squad has been a widely talked about affair. England international Dawid Malan thinks that for India to be successful in the upcoming tournament, it is just a matter of making the right choices.
Speaking with the Bangladesh-based sports gaming company, Linebat News, the England batter reckons that with the plethora of talent available within India, a successful outing in the T20 World Cup would just come down to the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) making the right calls in terms of selections.
“With the ongoing IPL, we are seeing the rise of several new Indian players making a mark and if the board makes the right choices there is enough and more talent to help India excel at the upcoming T20 World Cup,” Malan said on Thursday.

Another highly contested topic is whether the Indian team would have Virat Kohli in the squad. The top-order batter who usually bats at number three for India, opens the batting for his franchise Royal Challengers Bengaluru and has had a fantastic start to the tournament as he currently leads the run-scoring charts, becoming the first to cross the 300-run mark in the tournament.
In RCB’s recent game against Rajasthan Royals, Kohli also became the first to score a hundred in the 2024 season but also shared an unwanted record of the ton being the slowest in IPL history which further fueled concerns about his strike rate.

But Malan reckons that the star India batter would be a strong choice to be selected for the side’s upcoming World Cup squad. He last played a T20I in the recently concluded home series against Afghanistan in January 2024. Before this he last played a T20I back in November 2022, marking a significant period away from the shortest format in international cricket.
“Further, while Virat (Kohli) has been away from T20 cricket, his performances (in IPL) certainly show that he makes a strong contender for making the final team,” Malan added.

The BCCI will likely be following the ongoing IPL season very closely as they will look to select a squad that has all their bases covered as they go into the tournament and reclaim the title that has eluded them since the inaugural edition in 2007.
