Shubman Gill’s tough luck in the Test format continues after the batter had a lacklustre performance in the first Test against South Africa at Centurion. However, this former cricketer explains what has been going wrong in Gill’s approach in the Test format.
Former Indian cricketer and World Cup winner, Sunil Gavaskar who is an Indian batting legend shared his two cents on what the young batter is doing wrong when approaching the longest format. Gavaskar speaking to Star Sports shared,” I think he is playing a bit too aggressively in Test cricket.”
He went on to explain how Test cricket is different from the limited forms of the games. Gavaskar added, “There is a slight difference when you play Test cricket when compared to T20I and ODI cricket. The difference is in the ball.”

The former cricketer further broke down the difference between the red ball and the white ball. He said, “The red ball moves a little more than the white ball in the air and off the pitch as well. It bounces a little more too. He should keep that in mind.”
Gill has been outstanding in the white-ball format especially ODIs where he started off the year with a double century against New Zealand and has then gone on to become the highest run-scorer for India in ODIs for the calendar year overtaking Virat Kohli.
But his form in the Test format has dipped. Particularly since his century against Australia in Ahmedabad back in March 2023. Gill has not been able to rack up a score of anything more than 30 in the seven innings he has played since.

Sunil Gavaskar concluded by looking back at how Gill started to garner attention with his shots and hopes that he works hard and continues to do well in the future. He said, “Shubman Gill started off his career so well and we praised his shots. We can only hope that he gets back into his form. Hope he trains harder and does well in the future.”
Gill will look to pad up once again and redeem himself as India aims to level the series against South Africa with the second Test being held at Cape Town, a place where India has never won a Test match against South Africa. So if India are to level the series then they will need the best of Gill to come back.
