The HPCA Stadium in Dharamsala was painted yellow by the Chennai Super Kings (CSK) fans as the defending champions locked horns with Punjab Kings (PBKS) on Sunday afternoon. The supporters gathered in large numbers to cheer for legendary MS Dhoni who walked out to bat a no. 9 for the first time in his IPL career.

The former CSK skipper received a rousing reception from the fans who cheered loudly at the picturesque venue. But their excitement was short-lived as Dhoni secured a golden duck. It was the 19th over when Dhoni stepped out after Harshal Patel cleaned up Shardul Thakur. The right-arm quick then bowled a slower Yorker to welcome the legend into the middle. The ball dipped in slightly and went underneath Dhoni’s bat to break the stumps.
It was a massive wicket for Harshal that silenced the partisan crowd. However, the pacer didn’t celebrate the moment.
Patel returned figures of 3/24 in his 4-over spell, equaling Jasprit Bumrah’s tally of most wickets in the ongoing IPL 2024. Speaking with the broadcasters after the innings, he revealed why he didn’t celebrate the wicket of MS Dhoni.

“I have too much respect for him to celebrate when I get him out. One of the advantages of playing a day game is that the square is quite rough. So the ball starts reversing. In my first over it was reversing. It’s all about the feel of that delivery. The more you bowl the better you get. Most batters don’t pick it. Have been practicing in the nets, and when it comes out it gives you great results,” Harshal said.
Punjab, however, couldn’t hold on to the game while chasing 168. Ravindra Jadeja orchestrated a masterclass all-round show as Chennai regained their winning touch with a comprehensive 28-run win.
Wily leg-spinner Rahul Chahar (3/23) and seamer Harshal Patel (3/24) put up a spirited show but Jadeja made a crucial 43 that came off just 26 balls to prop CSK to a par 167/9 after they were sent in to bat by Sam Curran.
The left-arm spinner then returned to grab three for 20 in four overs in the crucial middle-over phase to derail PBKS’ chase, which ended at 139 for nine. Comeback pacer Tushar Deshpande (2/35) and impact sub Simarjeet Singh (2/16) also featured among the wickets.
