DoT to constitute a committee to examine the use of levels for short codes for accessing the network for SMS.

New Delhi: Mobile operators got a reprieve with TRAI allowing them to continue with their existing short messaging codes for SMS services by extending their compliance period, following Government's decision to form a committee on the same.

The Department of Telecom has decided to constitute a committee to examine the use of levels for short codes for accessing the network for SMS & other services.

In view of the above, it has been decided to extend the date for reporting the compliance of this direction by three months, TRAI said.

The issue is question was short messaging codes that operators provide to the customers for participating TV contests, other value added services like messaging a particular four-digit number for ringtone download and such services. These were highly a revenue-generating services.

TRAI on July 17 termed the use of these codes as a violation of National Numbering Plan and had directed operators to comply with Telecom Numbering Plan.

It had issued a direction to Cellular Mobile Service providers and Unified access service providers who are not complying with Nation Numbering Plan in respect of use of some prohibited levels for short codes for SMS.

As per National Numbering Plan and DoT's communication dated November 29, 2004, Unified Access / Basic / Cellular Mobile service providers are allowed to use the levels except 0, 1, 7, 8 & 9 for allocation of short codes to their content providers including SMS based services within their network.
