Mumbai: The markets closed in the negative terrain on account of heavy selling during last half hour. Asia closed quite soft and European markets have also opened weak.
The Sensex closed below the 12000 level at 11,970.47 down 100.83 points and the Nifty slipped below 3450 mark during the day and closed at 3457 down 37 points.
The BSE Small Cap Index closed at 5,971.59 down 61 points.
The BSE Midcap Index ended at 4,997.21 down 62 points.
Earlier markets opened in the green on the back of buying seen in index pivotals.
At 0957 hrs IST, the Sensex was trading at 12108 up 36 points and the Nifty was up 4 points at 3497.
Ranbaxy, Infosys, SBI, ONGC, HLL, Hindalco, ITC, GSK, ICICI Bank, Nalco were the major gainer.
The Asian markets were trading mixed. Japan's Nikkei was up 0.67 per cent, Taiwan's Taiwan Weighted gained 0.26 per cent, Hong Kong's Hang Seng was up 0.22 per cent. However, South Korea's Seoul Composite fell 0.09 per cent or 1.17 points at 1,373.13. Singapore's Straits Times was down 0.45 per cent.
Crude oil futures rose. A barrel of light crude settled at $63.80, up 47 cents on the New York Mercantile Exchange after earlier rising more than $1.
