New Delhi: The markets ended on a disappointing note in the negative terrain despite some strong global cues. The markets opened with a gap up and spent most of the day in positive terrain but slipped in red during the last hour of trade.
Pressure came in from technology and steel stocks after rallying for the past few days. Buying was seen in select capital goods and banking stocks.
The top gainers on indices were BHEL, SBI, Ranbaxy, Suzlon Energy. Among the laggards were NTPC, BPCL, Grasim, HDFC, TCS and Dabur India are among the top losers.
But on a weekly basis Sensex closes in positive up around 50 points. Capital goods ndex has gained nearly 2.7 per cent during the week with BHEL, L&T and Siemens as the top gainers on the index.
There was good news on the macroeconomic front, inflation for week ended June 2 at 4.80 per cent vs 4.85 per cent; in line with market estimate.
Sensex was down 41.01 points or 0.29 per cent at 14162.71, and the Nifty up 1.45 points or 0.03 per cent at 4171.45.
About 1246 shares have advanced, 1196 shares declined, and 84 shares are unchanged. The BSE Midcap Index ended at 6,180.92 up 19 points or 0.31 per cent.
The BSE Smallcap Index ended at 7,350.25 up 29 points or 0.40 per cent. The BSE Bankex was up 0.6 per cent at 7,461.59. Union Bank, UTI Bank, Kotak Mahindra and Allahabad Bank moved upwards.
The BSE Capital Goods Index was up 1.7 per cent at 11,156.78. Suzlon Energy, BEML, Greaves Cotton, Carborundum, Bharat Bijlee, BHEL closed higher.
The BSE Health Care Index was up 0.05 per cent at 3,795.20. GlaxoSmithKline, Apollo Hospital, Ranbaxy Labs, Lupin and Divis Labs closed higher.
The BSE Auto Index closed at 4,674.80 up 0.2 per cent. Bharat Forge, Maruti Udyog, TVS Motor and Tata Motorsclosed higher.
The BSE Metal Index closed at 9,896.84 down 0.7 per cent. JindalStainless, Tata Steel, Hindalco, Shree Precoated, Mah Seamless declined.
The BSE FMCG Index closed at 1,788.73 up 0.5 per cent. United Brewerie, United Spirits, Marico, HLL closed higher.
The NSE cash turnover was at Rs 8663.11 crore and the NSE F&O turnover was at Rs 31204.39 crore. The BSE cash turnover was Rs 4207.6 crore. Total market wide turnover was at Rs 44075.1 crore.
