Market ends flat, RIL gains
The market closed on a flat note. Selling was seen in metal, pharma, auto, banking, FMCG and technology stocks. However, oil stocks gained. Reliance closed up over 6 per cent.

New Delhi: The market closed on a flat note. Selling was seen in metal, pharma, auto, banking, FMCG and technology stocks. However, oil stocks gained. Reliance closed up over 6 per cent.

The Sensex closed up 2.94 points at 9,314.13. It touched an intraday high of 9,421.52 and an intraday low of 9,289.23.

The Nifty closed down 4 points at 2,829.10. It touched an intraday high of 2,861 and an intraday low of 2,821.

The CNX Midcap Index closed down 47.50 points or 1.13 per cent at 4,141.05. It touched an intraday high of 4,219 and an intraday low of 4,131.55.

The BSE Small Cap Index closed down 1.21% at 6143.77 and the BSE Midcap Index closed down 0.92 per cent at 4583.05.

Reliance, IPCL, HDFC Bank, and TCS were the biggest index gainers.

Sail, MTNL, VSNL, Tata Motors, Wipro, Shipping Corp, Tata Steel, NTPC and Ranbaxy Labs were the biggest index losers.

The market breadth was negative, about 785 shares advanced, 1669 shares declined, and 54 shares remained unchanged.

The total market turnover today was at Rs 41,428.47 crore. The BSE cash turnover was at Rs 4,395.2 crore. The NSE cash turnover was at Rs 9,277 crore. The NSE F&O turnover was at Rs 27,756.27 crore.

The BSE Oil & Gas Index outperformed the other indices. It closed up 2.91 per cent at 4555.82. Reliance closed up over 6 per cent.

Reliance Industries total turnover was at Rs 12,812 crore - that's 31 per cent of total market turnover of Rs 41,428 crore. The BSE cash turnover was at Rs 1,561 crore. The NSE cash turnover was at Rs 4,505. The NSE F&O turnover was at Rs 6,746 crore.

Select consumer durables stocks also firmed up.

However, The BSE Metal Index underperformed the other indices. It closed down 1.26 per cent at 6424.77, as stocks like Gujarat NRE Coke, Jindal Steel, Sesa Goa, Sail, Tata Steel, JSW Steel and Hindalco ended in the red.

The BSE Healthcare Index closed down 1.10 per cent at 3,199.01 due to losses in Apollo Hospital, Matrix Lab, Wyeth, Ranbaxy Labs, Dr Reddy's Labs, Cipla and Sun Pharma.

Auto stocks like Hindustan Motors, Escorts, Cummins, Tata Motors, Maruti, Bajaj Auto and Hero Honda also lost ground. The BSE Auto Index closed down 0.94 per cent at 4,239.37.

Banking stocks like Allahabad Bank, Bank of India, Andhra Bank, Union Bank, ICICI Bank and SBI also ended lower. The BSE Bankex closed down 0.94 per cent at 5,078.29.

FMCG stocks like P&G, Colgate, HLL, Tata Tea, Shaw Wallace and ITC also witnessed selling pressure. The BSE FMCG Index closed down 0.79 per cent at 1,631.11.

Technology stocks like Moser Baer, Patni Computer, Wipro, MphasiS BFL and Infosys also finished lower. The BSE IT Index closed down 0.74 per cent at 3,565.26.

Select selling was also seen in capital goods stocks.
