New Delhi: After the Tatas, Ambanis, Mittals and Birlas it's now Vijay Mallya who is eyeing the retail space. Mallya plans to embark on liquor vending.
After bringing liquor to the party, Vijay Mallya now wants to serve it too. The UB group is now looking at retailing liquor through its own outlets. This will complete the entire supply chain circuit for the company.
Vijay Mallya, Chairman, UB Group says, "There are abnormal profits at that end and we are looking at that space very seriously.
Apart from a financial study we are also looking at licenses and permits that are very complex. But if its feasible we will get into it."
But retailing of liquor is not so easy. Industry players say that to sell liquor one needs licenses and permits for each state and every state has a different permit policy.
Also in some states the government has stopped giving any new licenses, so that again could be a hurdle for UB.
Currently liquor retail is very fragmented and unorganised with each retailer owning not more than a few shops- that also mostly within a city.
At a time when the organised retail industry is attracting huge investments, this will be the first step in organised liqour retailing.
