Mumbai: Indian equities markets opened weak Tuesday and stayed in the red throughout the day, a key index shedding more than 350 points to end below the psychologically important 9,000-point mark.
The 30-share benchmark sensitive index (Sensex) of the Bombay Stock Exchange (BSE) finished at 8,937.20, down 353.81 points or 3.81 per cent from the previous day's close at 9,291.01 points.
The Sensex opened lower at 9,084.12, down 206.89 or 2.22 per cent and hit a low of 8,871.71 points before inching back a bit to finish at its closing value.
The broader-based 50-share S&P CNX Nifty of the National Stock Exchange (NSE) also showed a similar trend and closed at 2683.15, down 116.4 points or 4.16 per cent from its previous close at 2799.55 points.
The BSE midcap index finished at 3,060.32, down 73.04 points or 2.33 per cent from its previous close at 3,133.36 points.
The BSE smallcap index closed at 3,558.66, down 102.73 points or 2.81 per cent from its previous close at 3,661.39 points.
