Mumbai: The bulls were back with vengeance on Wednesday after three days of heavy selling in the markets. The markets witnessed volatility in the initial trades but firmed up moving ahead and closed with some good gains.
The markets closed near the highest point of the day despite ONGC and HLL closing in red. Midcaps also participated in the uptrend.
The Sensex closed up 186.32 points or 1.43 per cent at 13181.34, and the Nifty up 48.30 points or 1.30 per cent at 3765.2.
About 1605 shares have advanced, 856 shares declined, and 55 shares are unchanged.
The BSE Small Cap Index closed at 6,393.74 up 115 points or 1.8 per cent.
The BSE Midcap Index ended at 5,477.36 up 107 points or 2 per cent.
The BSE Bankex was up 3 per cent at 6,725.69. Andhra Bank, IOB, Karnataka Bank, Union Bank, Bank of Baroda moved upwards.
The BSE IT Index gained 0.06 per cent at 4,993.39. Moser Baer, Mphasis BFL, Satyam, TCS advanced.
The BSE Metal Index was up 0.5 per cent to close at 8,385.45. Welspun Guj, Sterlite Ind, Hind Zinc, Mah Seamless, Sesa Goa ended higher.
The BSE Capital Goods Index was up 2.3 per cent at 8,953.39. Siemens, Bharat Elec, Alstom Projects, Crompton Greave, Lakshmi Machine closed higher.
The BSE Health Care Index closed was up 2 per cent at 3,599.19. Divis Labs, Glenmark, Dr Reddys Labs, Wyeth, Aurobindo Pharm, Ipca Labs closed higher.
The BSE Auto Index closed at 5,148.39 up 1.3 per cent. TVS Motor, Ashok Leyland, Apollo Tyres, Cummins, Tata Motors, Escorts moved higher.
The BSE Oil and Gas Index gained 1.3 per cent to close at 5,868.93. IOC, HPCL , Petronet LNG, Reliance, MRPL ended in green.
The BSE FMCG Index lost 0.5 per cent at 1,906.53.
The NSE cash turnover was at Rs 9629.58 crore and the NSE F&O turnover was at Rs 35781.99 crore. The BSE cash turnover was Rs 4406.39 crore. Total market wide turnover was at Rs 49817.96 crore.
