This Bengaluru Salon Owner Was Once a Net Bowler For Pakistani Cricket Team
Meet Daniel Liao, a salon owner from Bengaluru, who used to be net bowler for the Pakistani cricket team. Here is what we know.

After playing against players like Virat Kohli and Hardik Pandya, Daniel Liao is now giving them different hairstyles. Hailing from Bengaluru, Daniel happens to be the fortunate one to have bowled at Pakistani players in the nets when they played a Test match in the city in 2005. Before any important match, practice sessions are mandatory and net bowlers remain crucial to help sides get ready. While speaking to Geo News, Daniel said, “I bowled a lot to Salman Butt. Abdul Razzaq was a funny guy. I really had a great time bowling to the Pakistani players and also mingling with them.”

Daniel also recalled bowling for Inzamam-Ul-Haq. “I was a net bowler and I have wonderful memories of bowling to Inzamam sir on nets,” he said. “I bowled him a slow, flight delivery two steps ahead. He missed the ball and was very angry, and then on the next delivery, he came down the wicket and he hit me out of the park. The ball was lost. The only person who came to me then was Younis Khan who told me: ‘Beta, don’t get scared, bowl flight’. That was my memory of him.”

In 2012, Daniel decided to switch jobs. From playing cricket to becoming a hairstylist – it has been a real journey for him. Several leading Indian cricketers such as Virat Kohli and Hardik Pandya have visited his salon and have been styled by him. “A lot of cricketers come here and during IPL time they invite me to where they stay and I go there. A lot of us have studied in the same college, so they have confidence in me. I have styled Virat Kohli. Hardik Pandya has also come here and so has Robin Uthappa, KL Rahul and Karun Nair,” Daniel explained.

Daniel recalls all of this as Bengaluru’s M.Chinnaswamy Stadium will play host to its first match of the ongoing 2023 ODI World Cup. The match happens to be with five-time champions Australia taking on Pakistan. Daniel explained how he is too emotional to see the Pakistani team visit his city. “I have a very good connection with them,” he said.

Meanwhile, earlier, a Swiggy delivery executive from Bengaluru was chosen as the net bowler for Netherlands’ team. 29-year-old Lokesh Kumar is a left-arm-pacer-turned-wrist-spin bowler. He was picked to bowl at the Netherlands batters during the camp in Bengaluru. While speaking to the Times of India, he said, “This is one of the most precious moments of my career. I am yet to even play in the TNCA third division league.”
