Coimbatore: German auto major Volkswagen is working on plans to roll out an 'India-specific' Sedan next year, a top official of the company said today.

"It will be a compact Sedan and compatible with Indian conditions. The rollout will be most likely during next year," Volkswagen Managing Director Thierry Lespiaucq told reporters here.

He declined to divulge price details, but said it won't be below Rs 5 lakh.

Lespiaucq, who was here to inaugurate a new car dealership and hand over the 3,00,000th car in India, said the company has lined up a series of exciting new launches for the next 24 months as "they are optimistic about continuing with their growth momentum in the Indian market".

The company sold 45,000 units in 2014 in India and is confident of stability in 2015 also, he said.

On dealerships, he spoke of "sufficient coverage" with nearly 120 showrooms across 100 cities in India.

Volkswagen will consider ramping up the network once it crosses the sale of one lakh cars per annum, the MD said.

Hailing the government's 'Make in India' and 'Ease of Doing Business' initiatives, he said the tax issue needs to be dealt with.

However, Lespiaucq remains optimistic of the potential benefits of the Goods and Service Tax once passed, saying he personally feels the Opposition should extend support to the government in schemes that could benefit India.
