Traffic in India almost resonates with the country’s image, no matter what part of it you come from, a stuck-in-traffic anecdote is easy and common to us all. However, with the rising traffic chaos on the roads, accidents too have seen a spike in recent times. And in such times, dashboard cameras are becoming quite important and useful. Not only do they serve as a vital tool in the present time where auto thefts and accidents are going up by the day, but also as a means to have a visual recording of an incident.

In one such bizarre incident, the footage from a dashboard camera saved a commuter from being slapped with a huge fine. According to a CarToq report, the incident occurred on one of the major arterial roads of Delhi. As there was a lot of traffic build up on the road, the car owner was slowly inching forward with other vehicles. However, as soon as he crossed the green traffic light, a Toyota Innova coming from the extreme left lane decided to take a right turn. In the process, he cuts through the traffic, causing a delay there and in the meantime, the signal turns red.

The person inside the car had crossed the pedestrian crossing line (zebra crossing) and was stranded at the junction. To give way to other vehicles, he then decided to clear the way and move ahead. Unfortunately, the traffic police who were waiting on the other side came and waved him to stop. The car driver took his vehicle to the side of the road and started talking to them. The traffic police personnel accused him of jumping the signal and were not listening to any of the drivers’ words. But as luck favoured him, the driver had both front and rear dashboard cameras installed in his vehicle. He asked the cops to see and verify the footage for themselves. He repeatedly told them that he did not even cross the signal when it was amber (yellow) and only moved when it was green, which is not his fault. The police saw the dashcam footage, agreed to his claim and then let him go from the spot.
