The Land Rover Defender has been one of the most iconic cars to ever be produced by the company and the 67-year old icon only went out of production last year. Given the nameplate's popularity, the British automaker is set to bring the car back in an all-new avatar, one which will be the brand's most high-tech car yet, according to a report by Autocar UK.
Jaguar Land Rover CEO Ralf Speth said to Autocar UK that "It was one of the saddest moments of my career to end production of the old Defender. So we are working very hard to give it an authentic successor.”
The report also goes on to confirm that defender will be available in two wheelbase variants – 2922mm and 3120mm in standard and long wheelbase guises respectively – but will have short overhangs for better off-road capabilities. Suspension duties are likely to be handled by the Discovery/Range Rover’s all-independent set-up and will reportedly be powered by the the four-cylinder versions JLR's modular Ingenium engine and it is also expected to come with a choice of manual and automatic gearboxes.
JLR is already testing the mules at secret locations around the world and it looks "fantastic", says Speth to Autocar UK.
The Defender is expected to be launched in 2019-2020 and will certainly hold major significance for the company upon its release, given that it has massive expectations to live up to. For now, we can only wait and watch on the developments surrounding the car. Watch this space for updates.
