Hindustan Motors has unveiled its premium Sports Utility Vehicle Montero from the Mitsubishi stable.

New Delhi: Hindustan Motors on Thursday unveiled its premium Sports Utility Vehicle (SUV) Montero from the Mitsubishi stable.

The 3.2-litre Mitsubishi Montero has a four cylinder in line turbo diesel engine that belts out 165 bhp and 372.4 Nm torque, and a five-speed gearbox.

"With the Mitsubishi Montero, we are clearly in the niche market. We are not aiming at big volumes in the the mass market," Hindustan Motors MD Ravi Santhanam said.

The company has plans to expand its range of models comprising the Cedia, Lancer, Pajero and now Montero. "We are working on various initiatives for our next launch," Santhanam said. However, he declined to give further details saying ''it will be too early to announce.''

The new model priced at a reasonably attractive tag of Rs 29.70 lakhs can face competition from other SUVs like Toyota's Land Cruiser Prado, Hyundai Terracan, which comes in the same size and with a common rail motor, though about Rs 10 lakh costlier than Montero.

Montero is the second model by Hindustan Motors this year, after the launch of Mitsubishi Cedia.

The Montero has a capacity to accomodate 7-8 passengers. The third row or both the second and third row of seats can be removed and stowed away to provide huge space for carrying anything required by the user.

With a 90-litre fuel tank capacity, Montero will be distributed through the existing network of dealers in India. The Montero comes as a Completely Built Unit (CBU) with dual-front airbags, four wheel drive, stability and traction control.

Hindustan Motors had entered into a collaboration with Mitsubishi Motors Corporation, Japan in 1998 for the Lancer car and Pajero SUV.
