Chennai: New Railway Terminal To Shift From Villivakkam To Perambur, Here's Why
The railways will be adding 2,500 new general class coaches and plan to introduce 5,000 more in the coming years to better serve unreserved passengers.

Chennai’s long-awaited fourth railway terminal, initially slated for Villivakkam, is now moving to Perambur.

Southern Railway General Manager R N Singh shared this exciting news with the press, revealing that ample land is available in Perambur for this project. The final proposal is being prepared as quoted by The Indian Express.

Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw, speaking via video from New Delhi, announced a significant budget boost for Tamil Nadu’s railways. The state will receive Rs 6,362 crore for 2024-25, up from Rs 6,080 crore last year. Vaishnaw also highlighted ongoing projects worth Rs 33,467 crore in Tamil Nadu, including the development of 77 stations.

Additionally, 2,500 new general class coaches are set to be manufactured, with plans to add 5,000 more coaches in the near future to ease travel for unreserved passengers.

At the Chennai railway headquarters, Singh also outlined plans to lay two extra lines between Perambur and Ambattur. Once this is completed, the proposal for the fourth terminal will be sent to the railway board for approval.

Addressing delays in the Kilambakkam station project, Singh assured that construction issues have been resolved and the station should be ready by October.

The third terminal at Tambaram is being developed through a public-private partnership. Singh noted that a detailed project report will be submitted soon, with construction to follow, though it might take some time.

He also mentioned that the railways have finished their work on rail over bridges at 40 locations, but progress is stalled due to land acquisition issues on the state government’s end.
