BERLIN: An object containing nails and gunpowder was found on board on out-of-service train in the German city of Cologne and made safe, police said Saturday. Experts later determined that it couldn’t have exploded and wasn’t dangerous.
A cleaner found the object in a train parked on sidings outside Colognes Deutz station on Friday night, police said. Specialists secured it early Saturday.
Experts who examined the object found that it contained nails and a small amount of gunpowder, according to a police statement. It wasn’t capable of igniting in the situation where it was found, police added.
Specialists believe that, even if it had been ignited, the nails would have moved only a few centimeters and a risk to nearby people or objects was extremely unlikely,” the statement said.
The background to the find was unclear. Officers combed through all 27 trains in the same sidings to make sure there were no other suspicious objects.
