In today’s challenging job market, securing a well-paying job can be difficult. Recently, a corporate professional’s choice to accept a lower-paying position raised eyebrows online. A LinkedIn user shared the story of a friend who declined a job offer of ₹23 lakh per year to take a position offering ₹18 lakh annually. Initially, the user disagreed with his friend’s decision, but after learning about the rationale behind this unexpected choice, he gained a new perspective. Surprisingly, many social media users also expressed support for this decision.
The individual wrote, “A friend of mine rejected a job offer of Rs 23 LPA and accepted one for Rs 18 LPA instead. Initially, I thought he was making a huge mistake. But when he explained his reasoning, it all made sense. The company he chose offers a hybrid 5-day work culture and is known for providing exceptional work-life balance. On the other hand, the Rs 23 LPA offer came from a company with a strict 6-day work week and no option for even a single day of remote work. It got me thinking about how priorities have shifted more and more people today are prioritizing flexibility, balance and time for themselves outside of work. The idea of constantly burning out to chase a paycheck is losing its appeal."
The user explained that his friend had faced health issues due to the long hours required by his previous job. Now, he recognises the value of spending quality time with family and friends and prioritizing self-care. According to the user, achieving a healthy work-life balance has become just as important as securing a high-paying job. He admires individuals like his friends who place their well-being at the forefront of their decisions.
Reacting to the post, a user wrote, “It’s the best decision. I will choose better work culture over better package anytime, as I have experienced both. At the end of the day, you need peace. Salary comes once a month, and at top keeps you motivated for a week. Rest of the month, you need flexibility, peace, good culture. And I must say we are lucky if we get to choose between two."
Another shared, “Here there are many who are not even getting calls even after getting shortlisted. But yeah your friends made a wise choice and that is what it is called work-life balance."
“At least your friend didn’t demand the same package or even more which is a good sign of professionalism. Those days the satisfaction levels were met very easily but now we don’t have a limit as it differs from each individual. I guess we have got the days where we started to assess the salary with respect to the mental health and well-being and not just with work and position," a comment read.
An individual shared, “Over a period of time few people realize that protecting peace of mind is more important than winning every argument or trying to micromanage in the name of running efficiencies."
One more added, “Giving equal priority to your personal life is a necessity. Because who knows KAL HO NA HO."
Since the post was shared on LinkedIn, it has garnered over 3,000 views.
