Who would have imagined that a leisurely morning walk in the forest would lead to 9-year-old Shreyovi Mehta securing a spot in the Wildlife Photographer of the Year competition? A fifth-grade student, Shreyovi was enjoying a stroll through Keoladeo National Park in Bharatpur, Rajasthan, with her parents when she stumbled upon this remarkable opportunity. After spotting a pair of peahens, she took the chance to photograph them with her father’s camera, and her stunning shot has since gained international recognition.
Titled In the Spotlight, the photograph features the peahens standing under the canopy of trees amid the morning light. “It was this perfect moment that inspired Shreyovi to crouch down low on the ground to snap this dream-like image of these iconic Indian birds,” the Natural History Museum wrote on its website.
The young girl was named runner-up in the 10 Years And Under category of the competition.
Shreyovi also shared the same on her Instagram with a long post about her achievement. Mentioning that she has been awarded in the prestigious competition, she wrote, “My heart is filled with immense joy and gratitude. Thank you to Mom and Dad. My parents have always supported me in chasing my dreams, even when they seemed too big for a kid like me. Your love and encouragement have been my greatest strength. I am so proud to represent my Bharat on this global stage. India’s rich wildlife and heritage have been a source of endless inspiration, and I promise to keep working hard to bring more of it to you.”
She also spoke about keeping up her practice, learning and improving to do even better in her journey. “The journey continues, and I’m excited for what’s next! That’s Shreyovi’s promise. Thank you, everyone, for your support! Let’s keep celebrating the beauty of our planet together!” her post continues.
The social media post received a lot of reactions on the platforms, with many lauding the girl’s achievement at such a young age. A user wrote, “Right place at the right time. Btw that deer to the right. So subtle it’s beautiful. I’d say deer contribution to picture is as powerful as the peacocks,” while another commented, “Just read about you in Newspaper and search your name to give big congratulations. Excellent work kid. A big congratulations to have this achievement.”
“What an incredible shot! It’s like straight out of a fairytale! Whoa! What an awesome photograph,” another comment read.
A user added, “Wow. Great job. Can’t believe the photographer is just an 8 year old girl.”
