Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose’s 1921 Resignation Letter Resurfaces On His 127th Birth Anniversary
At the young age of 24, Bose took the bold decision of resignation, showing his dedication to a higher purpose – the fight for India’s freedom.

On the occasion of Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose’s 127th birth anniversary, a significant historical document has captured the attention of the nation. Indian Forest Service (IFS) officer Parveen Kaswan shared a copy of Netaji’s resignation letter from the Indian Civil Services (ICS) dated April 22, 1921. This letter reveals Bose’s decision to step away from a promising career in the ICS to actively participate in the freedom struggle.

In his historic resignation letter addressed to Edwin Montagu, the secretary of state, Bose explicitly expressed his desire to have his name removed from the list of probationers in the Indian Civil Service. At the young age of 24, Bose took this bold step, showcasing his dedication to a higher purpose – the fight for India’s freedom.

Bose further noted in the letter that he had received an allowance of 100 pounds during his probationary period, and he committed to remitting this amount to the India office as soon as his resignation was accepted.

The letter, now widely shared on social media, is a facsimile copy sourced from the National Archives India, underscoring the historical significance and authenticity of the document.

“On April 22, 1921, Subhash Chandra Bose resigned from the Indian Civil Service to participate in the Freedom struggle. For a greater cause,” read the caption accompanying the post.

India commemorates Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose’s birth anniversary on January 23, 2024, as Parakram Diwas. On this day, Prime Minister Narendra Modi extended his wishes to the people of India, emphasising the life and courage of Netaji.

“His unwavering dedication to our nation’s freedom continues to inspire,” PM Modi wrote on microblogging platform X.

President Draupadi Murmu also paid tribute to Netaji, acknowledging his exceptional dedication to India’s freedom.

Cultural events are organised across the country by schools and institutions on Subhas Chandra Bose Jayanti. The day is marked by the ceremonial raising of the Indian national flag, and iconic landmarks such as the INA Museum, Netaji Bhawan and Netaji Museum are garlanded in honour of the legendary freedom fighter. Students actively participate by reflecting on the inspirational legacy of Netaji and other freedom fighters through speeches delivered on stage.
