Believe it or not, inmates of Udaipur Jail have been making air coolers to combat the scorching heat of Rajasthan. Air coolers are generally known for their high efficiency and durability. To broaden the rehabilitation programme of the jail, the inmates are given proper training to hone their skills to become self-sufficient after they are released.

From May, the inmates have made about 500 coolers so far. But that is not the end of it. Since this year, Rajasthan is getting baked at high temperatures, there has been a surge in demand for air coolers. Hence, the prisoners are still occupied in crafting these coolers. As per reports, they are aiming to make 596 coolers.

Air coolers are known to be extremely sturdy and the best to beat the blazing heat. The inmates here craft it by using strong 22 gauge sheets and the cooler capacity is 90 litres. It is generally not found in other coolers. Because of this reason and the ability to provide a cool relief in less time, this electronic gadget is best suitable for such extreme temperatures.

The Superintendent shared that the motive behind the construction of these coolers is not for profit margin. On the contrary, it is an initiative taken up to make sure the inmates become self-reliant and can feed their families after they step out of jail after serving their time. These qualities will be required when they enter the job market and instead focus on doing something good.

Apart from making coolers, inmates are further engaged in other training programmes to enhance their skills and well-being. They train in sewing, carpet weaving, computers, music and various other related skills. To reduce stress, yoga, meditation and pranayam sessions are conducted regularly.
