New Delhi: Amidst concerns that Google's Project Loon could interfere with cellular transmissions of mobile operators in India, Google appears confident that it will manage to bring the Internet beaming balloons to India.
On the sidelines of the Google for India event, we got to speak with Google's Marian Croak, who is responsible for developing the world's largest wireless and broadband networks, and she categorically said that the company would soon launch Project Loon to India. While she didn't share any time frame, she said, "we will launch as soon as we can."
When asked about the objections that Communications and IT Minister Ravi Shankar Prasad had expressed given that the proposed frequency band to be used in the Loon Project is already being used for cellular operations in India, Marian said, "For Project Loon, we are in discussions with the government. And one of the biggest concerns has to do with impedance - that we will interfere with the spectrum. But we have already faced this situation in other countries as well and we have been successful in being able to go ahead with the testing.
"We believe we have an answer to that around spectrum sharing and that we will be able to solve the issue by sharing the spectrum in a way that it doesn't create impedance. And it's up to Google to convince the government."
Project Loon is a network of balloons travelling on the edge of space, designed to connect people in rural and remote areas, help fill coverage gaps, and bring people back online after disasters.
