Pixel 5a India Launch Near? BIS Certification Leaks as Google Aims Higher Sales
The Pixel 5a is expected to launch in India some time in June 2021, and Google may equip it with more competitive specs to rival OnePlus and other popular companies.

Pixel 5a has not seen extensive leaks the way smartphones do as they near their official launches, but information has started trickling in gradually. A new report claims that the Google Pixel 5a smartphone, which is said to be under testing and certification stages right now, has been cleared and certified by the Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS). The BIS certification has listed the smartphone with its codename nomenclature, stating it as ‘G Logo GR0M2’ – which enthusiasts and observers believe corresponds to the upcoming Pixel phone. The list has suggested that the Pixel 5a is now close to its official commercial launch.

The latest piece of information comes days after a previous report by The Economic Times, which claimed that Google aims to give its Pixel line of hardware a serious push in India. It claimed that Google now aims to have double the number of Pixel 5a units available in India, as compared to last year’s Google Pixel 4a. Alongside, the Search and internet data giant also aims to bring local manufacturing of its smartphones to India – where it chose to not sell some of its latest smartphones barring the Pixel 4a. The move will seemingly be a part of a renewed push to try and make the Pixel 5a popular in the recently invigorated mid-premium range of smartphones in India.

Not a lot is known about the Google Pixel 5a as yet. Reports have suggested that the Pixel 5a may feature a 6.2-inch full HD+ OLED display, and a plastic body to keep things light, slim and compact. It may feature a dual camera configuration at the back, which the company is sure to spice up with its critically acclaimed computational photography algorithms. Not much else is known about it as yet, but given previous traits, the Pixel 5a may run on a new generation Qualcomm Snapdragon 7 series processor.

One of the reasons why the Google Pixel line of phones have failed to gain a footing in India in terms of sales is its lacklustre appeal in terms of the specifications on offer. Google has focused more on the overall experience rather than stellar specifications, and even charged a premium to users for the same. As a result, Google has lost out to myriad Android OEMs such as OnePlus, Samsung, Vivo, Oppo, Realme, Xiaomi and more. Given that the company sounds upbeat about its chances with the Pixel 5a this year, it will be interesting to see if it goes out of its usual strategy to offer the smartphone with an enhanced feature set.

Given that reports have claimed that the Pixel 5a launch in India is still about three months away (with a stipulated June 11 launch), we are sure to hear more about the device in the coming months.
