The first modern Olympic games, officially called the Games of the I Olympiad, took place inside the Panathenaic Stadium in Athens, Greece in 1896.

New Delhi: Marking the 120th anniversary of the first modern Olympic Games, search giant Google has posted a series of doodles on its homepage.

The first modern Olympic games were officially called the Games of the I Olympiad and took place inside the Panathenaic Stadium in Athens, Greece in 1896.

The Games included 9 different sports and 43 events, including the most notable being the marathon which witnessed participation from the greatest number of international athletes ever. Another aspect noteworthy about the first modern Olympic Games was the winner, Spyridon 'Spyro' Louis, who was the only Greek champion in the athletics category and became a national hero for the host country.
