While other tech giants are coming out with high-resolution televisions, AI-powered devices and voices assistants at this year’s Consumer Electronics Show, Sony has kept its focus on its budget smartphone line-up. The company has unveiled three new budget smartphones at the CES 2018, namely Sony Xperia XA2, Xperia XA2 Ultra and a lower variant in the form of Sony Xperia L2. The Xperia XA2 and Xperia XA2 Ultra come as the successor to Sony’s last year launches, XA1 and XA1 Ultra and boast of 23-megapixel primary cameras with Sony’s own Exmor RS sensor.
Sony Xperia XA 2 and Xperia XA 2 Ultra are powered by a Qualcomm Snapdragon 630 SoC and carry 3GB RAM and 4GB RAM respectively. The 32GB internal storage on both is expandable up to 256GB using microSD. Those unveiled at the CES 2018 constitute of both single and dual-SIM variants and we expect the latter ones to come to India. Connectivity options on both include 4G LTE, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth v5.0, GPS/ A-GPS, NFC, FM radio and USB Type-C port.

The smartphones differ in their display size, battery capacity and optics. Xperia XA2 sports a 5.2-inch Full-HD display with 1920×1080 pixels resolution while the XA2 Ultra comes with a 6-inch Full-HD display, both protected by a Corning Gorilla Glass. Xperia XA2 is backed by a 3300 mAh battery, while the Xperia XA2 Ultra packs a bigger 3580 mAh backup, both supporting Qnovo Adaptive Charging as well as Qualcomm Quick Charge 3.0.
Sony has re-positioned the fingerprint sensor on the Xperia XA2 series smartphones from their “on the power-button" position. Both Xperia XA2 and Xperia XA2 Ultra now feature a fingerprint sensor at the back.
On the optics front, the Xperia XA2 sports an 8-megapixel selfie camera with 120-degree wide-angle lens (f/2.4), while the Xperia XA2 Ultra features a dual camera lens setup at the front with one 16-megapixel (f/2.0) primary lens with OIS and one 8-megapixel Exmor R 120-degree wide-angle lens with a f/2.4 aperture. NBoth the smartphones come with a 23-megapixel Exmor RS camera sensor (f/2.0) that with hybrid autofocus and 4k video recording support.
The smartphones will be available in the global market starting February 2018 in Blue, Silver, Black and Pink colour variants.
Along with these smartphones, Sony also unveiled Xperia L2, Sony’s new entry-level Xperia smartphone. It sports a 5.5-inch display with 720p resolution and is powered by a MediaTek MT6737T SoC. The memory offerings include a 3GB RAM and a 32GB internal storage along with a dedicated microSD slot to expand it further. It is backed by a 3300 mAh battery within a 178 grams weight class.
Optics on this one constitute of a 13-megapixel primary camera and an 8-megapixel selfie shooter with a wide-angle lens. The smartphone also sports a fingerprint sensor at the back. Out-of-the-box, the Xperia L2 will run Android Nougat 7.1.1. The smartphone will be up for sale in late January.
