The Solar Bike consists of battery that is directly charged using solar energy- making it sustainable and cost free.

New Delhi: First it was rechargeable electric bikes that turned heads, then came in swappable batteries. Now, welcome the Solar Bike. Redefining the way we perceive electric bikes, this new type of bike is aimed at a sustainable alternative to the electric bike.

The Solar Bike, as the name goes, consists of battery that is directly charged using solar energy- making it cost free. By using solar energy, it doesnt cut down on the speed potential. Speed can be adjusted from the standard 25km/hour to a maximum of 50km/hour.

It has solar cells built into both sides and the power is draws in from them when the bike isn't moving and stored inside the on-board battery. When in transit, the power comes both from the Thermos-shaped attached to the bike frame and from the solar cells.

However, as Engadget notes, because the wheels are facing out sideways, not getting solar rays head-on, it makes the task of absorbing light a little bit more difficult.

The battery capacity of the Solar Bike stores sufficient energy for 70km and the solar cells are shadow optimised which provides 2-25km/day(depending on the sun hours). Even the lights of the bike have integrated solar technology.
