New Delhi: It is extremely likely that Anna Hazare will call off his fast tomorrow after a resolution is passed in Parliament. Team Anna and the Centre have finally decided to meet half way. So what’s likely to happen tomorrow in Parliament?
The House is likely to discuss all four versions of the Bill tomorrow. However, there is going to be little or no discussion on the specific clauses of the bills. There will be no going into the details.
It is, most probably, going to be a generic discussion on corruption where representatives of the various parties will affirm their commitment to rid India of this malaise. And to that effect, the Indian Parliament will likely pass a resolution promising to pass a Lokpal Bill strong enough to weed out this virus.
The Government already has had a new draft of the Bill drawn up which incorporates some of the points made by Team Anna and other stakeholders. However, there is a small technical issue here. The Government may subsequently decide to table the fresh Bill which will automatically mean withdrawal of the older one already with the Standing Committee. But certain stakeholders may want a formal withdrawal of the earlier Bill.
All parliamentary procedures will be followed and the Standing Committee will review the draft and place its suggestions. Then, the provisions and clauses of the draft will be discussed and deliberated upon by the MPs before voting begins.
So, looking at this process which is most likely to unfold, it is virtually impossible that India will have a strong anti-corruption Lokpal Bill by August 30 which happened to be Anna Hazare’s original demand.
