Man attempts self-immolation outside Amma's house

Chennai: A 35-year-old man attempted self-immolation in front of AIADMK supremo J Jayalalithaa's Poes Garden Residence on Monday night, claiming that she had been the target of attack by some vested interests.

Police sources said Karnan (35), hailing from Villuppuram district of Tamil Nadu, attempted self-immolation after participating in the day-long fast organised by the AIADMK supremo on the Lankan issue.

When Karnan attempted to immolate himself in front of Jayalalithaa's residence, security personnel rounded him up and handed him over to the police.

Preliminary investigations revealed that Karnan had decided to end his life being unable to digest the criticisms against the AIADMK chief.

"People are talking ill of her. I cannot tolerate it'', he said, while attempting self-immolation.

Teyampet police have registered a case and are investigating the matter.
