Left Front stunned, to sit in Opposition
CPI-M, CPI says they will sit down and study reasons for 'setback'.

New Delhi: The Left Front, which could fall below 25 seats in Parliament, on Saturday admitted it had a “major setback” and announced would sit in the Opposition.

CPI-M general secretary Prakash Karat called for “serious examination”. "The CPI-M and the Left parties have suffered a major setback in these elections," he said. "This necessitates a serious examination of the reasons for the Party's poor performance."

Karat said the CPI-M "will continue its cooperation with the non-Congress, non-BJP (Bharatiya Janata Party) secular parties with whom we have been working".

"The CPI-M assures all those who have reposed faith in the party that we will continue to champion the interests of the working people, national sovereignty and secularism."

The CPI-M politburo would meet in New Delhi to discuss threadbare the reasons for the Left rout in its two traditional bastions in West Bengal and Kerala.

CPI stunned too

CPI General Secretary A B Bardhan said the party had “always been in Opposition” and would continue there. "Our expectations have not been fulfilled, we admit. ... Congress is in a position to form government. Let it form. We will sit in the opposition," he said in New Delhi.

Asked whether the Left would support the Congress in government formation, the veteran communist leader shot back "why should they need our support? They don't need our support. We will sit in opposition and fight for the cause of the poor."

He said the Left parties would meet here tomorrow to chalk out the future course of action and the four parties would hold meetings of their own to "review our work".

Asked about their Third Front partners like BSP, AIADMK, BJD and TDP, Bardhan said: "we are not abandoning them".
