Chennai: Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Jayalalithaa on Thursday urged National Security Advisor Shivshankar Menon to take up with Sri Lanka the issue of rehabilitation of displaced Tamils in the island nation and ensure they were allowed to live with dignity and equal rights on par with the Sinhalese.

Jayalalithaa also conveyed to Menon her concern over recurring attacks on Tamil Nadu fishermen by Sri Lankan defence forces and sought restoration of the fishermen's rights to fish around Katchatheevu, an islet ceded by India to Sri Lanka in 1974, an official release said.

Menon, who is to meet Sri Lankan President Mahinda Rajapakase in Colombo on Friday, called on Jayalalithaa and held discussions for about an hour.

Menon's meeting with the Chief Minister comes days after the state assembly passed a resolution unanimously demanding that India impose economic sanctions on Sri Lanka for its alleged killing of Tamils there.

The assembly on Thursday passed another resolution seeking to implead the Revenue Department in a case filed by Jayalalithaa on retrieving Katchatheevu.

Jayalalithaa said there were varied information on the number of Tamils displaced in the war and those living in the camps and already rehabilitated and insisted that detailed information in this regard should be collected.
