Chandigarh: For the first time ever the BJP will form the government in Haryana on its own. The Indian National Lok Dal (INLD) could not live up to the claims it made of forming the government and will now be out of power for three terms- a long time span in politics. The Congress too is on its lowest ebb in Haryana.
There were scenes of jubilation on the roads, streets, villages, towns of Haryana as excited BJP workers and supporters celebrated the massive change in fortune for the party. The party had hardly ever made its presence felt in Haryana and never so on its own.
The Congress conceded defeat easily as was always going to be an uphill task for it facing strong anti-incumbency after 10 years in power.
The BJP in Haryana did not have strong local leadership but had a massive surge in favor of Prime Minister Narendra Modi. From four seats in the last assembly to forming the government in these polls it has been a major rise in numbers for the BJP.
There is for now no decision on who will be the chief minister of Haryana. Elected candidates credit Modi for the win and say the chief minister will be decided by the party after consultations.
For the INLD being out of power for a third consecutive term might sound the death knell. With its top leaders in jail and the party no where close to forming the government as it had claimed, staying relevant would be a challenge though there are more INLD MLAs than the Congress in the assembly.
