Desiya Murpokku Dravida Kazhagam (DMDK) on Tuesday expelled its 5 MLAs and 10 district secretaries after they asked Vijaykanth to rethink alliance.

This development comes after Desiya Murpokku Dravida Kazhagam (DMDK) had formally entered into an electoral alliance with the People's Welfare Front constituting the two Left parties, MDMK and VCK in March 2016.

MDMK’s Vaiko had been pursuing alliance talks with Vijaykanth for over a month. People's Welfare Front consists of Marumalarchi Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (MDMK), Viduthalai Chiruthaigal Katchi (VCK) and Left parties.

Vijaykanth had earlier announced that his party would contest the polls on his own. DMDK mouthpiece Captain TV announced that DMDK will contest 124 seats while 110 seats will be contested by other constituents of the PWF.

In 2011 elections, DMDK contested in 41 constituencies as part of an AIADMK alliance and won about 29 seats and became the opposition party in the Tamil Nadu assembly.
