New Delhi: Delhi Police chief BS Bassi's name has been dropped from the list of probables for the post of Information Commissioner, amid the ongoing controversy of police action in connection with sedition case against Jawaharlal Nehru University Students Union president Kanhaiya Kumar.

There was growing uproar over his name in the list. There are also demands that he should not be given a post soon after his retirement.

Congress leader Mallikarjun Kharge had opposed Bassi's inclusion in the list. The Congress has already demanded Bassi's removal as police commissioner over his mishandling of the JNU incident.

Several leaders had mocked the government for awarding the police Commissioner for not being able to maintain law and order in Delhi.

"It shows that those who are helping government are being awarded. Bassi has been working on the behest of the top leaders in the government," Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) leader Ashutosh said.

Bassi is scheduled to retire from police service at the end of February.
