The Congress' West Bengal unit shot off a letter to Mamata urging her to take proper steps to stop the violence

Kolkata: The Congress' West Bengal unit on Friday shot off a letter to Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee urging her to take proper steps to stop the violence allegedly perpetuated by Trinamool Congress supporters on Congress workers across the state.

"We have written to Chief Mamata Banerjee and requested her to take steps to stop the violence being perpetrated on Congress workers by the Trinamool supporters. Such kind of things cannot be accepted," state Congress chief Pradip Bhattacharjee said at a media meet.

On many occasions earlier, senior Congress leaders have accused Trinamool activists of attacking Congress workers in various parts of the state.

"During the Left regime also there were regular attacks on Congress workers by those from the Left. The scenario is the same today also, the only difference is earlier CPI-M (Communist Party of India-Marxist) used to attack us, now alliance partner Trinamool is attacking us," he said.

Bhattacharjee on Friday also indicated that the state Congress was not keen in sending a replacement for former state minister Manoj Chakraborty, who resigned a few days back over difference with Banerjee, and had even called her a dictator.

"Till now we have not received any order from the high command regarding replacement of Manoj Chakraborty. We have discussed the matter with Pranab Mukherjee but nothing has been decided so far on the issue," he said.

Chakraborty, a minister of state, shot off his resignation to Congress president Sonia Gandhi, general secretary Rahul Gandhi and Mukherjee after Banerjee clipped his wings by taking away two departments in a reshuffle.

Chakraborty then called Mamata a dictator and questioned her performance.

The Congress leadership had then "sympathised" with Chakraborty, saying he was deeply "hurt and pained" by the sudden reshuffle.
