BSP MLA chargesheeted in Banda rape case
Mayawati says her party has taken the rape of the Dalit girl "very seriously".

Lucknow: Uttar Pradesh CB-CID on Thursday filed a chargesheet against Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) MLA Purushottam Naresh Dwivedi and four others in a Banda court for allegedly raping a Dalit girl. The MLA has been charged with physical assault, torture, illegal detention/wrongful confinement, rape and molestation. The charges against other four co-accused include physical assault, torture and intimidation.

Announcing the filing of the chargesheet against the BSP MLA, Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Mayawati said in Lucknow that her party has taken the rape of the Dalit girl "very seriously". She announced that a fast track court would hear the Banda rape case.

"My government has taken the Banda incident very seriously. I have already got the Banda MLA arrested. CB-CID has filed a chargesheet in the Banda case," said Mayawati while addressing a press conference in Lucknow.

Mayawati admitted that the theft charges levelled against the girl by the MLA were false.

"Government has taken action against the officials responsible for levelling false allegations against the girl. ASP Banda and jailor of Banda jail have been suspended," she announced.

Targeting her political opponents she claimed that the BSP had never shied away from against its leaders if they were accused of any wrong doing.

"Political parties are trying to tarnish my name. I have taken action against my ministers and MLAs whenever required," she said.

Dwivedi was chargesheeted even as a five-member team appointed by the Allahabad High Court visited Banda on Thursday. The High Court will hear the rape case on Friday.

Earlier on Tuesday, the High Court had allowed a two-member committee to meet the rape victim. The committee comprising of People's Union for Civil Liberties volunteer Vandana Mishra and advocate Deeba Siddiqui will submit its report to the court on Friday.

The Dalit girl was allegedly raped on December 10-11 at the residence of 48-year-old Dwivedi, who represents Naraini seat in the Uttar Pradesh Assembly.

She escaped from the MLA's house on December 12 when the MLA allegedly attempted rape for the third time and was arrested same day on theft charges.
