New Delhi: The BJP has released its first list of candidates for next month's assembly elections in Gujarat.
The party's central committee released the names of 75 candidates for the first phase polls to be held on December 11.
The party has sprung a surprise by dropping 20 sitting MLAs. The BJP had won 57 of these 75 seats in the 2002 polls.
Incidentally, 13 of the 75 candidates announced on Sunday are women. In comparison, the party had fielded just 12 women in all in 2002.
The reason behind fielding new faces this time is to combat the anti-incumbency factor and also to blunt the serious threat posed by party rebels in places like Saurashtra and South Gujarat.
Meanwhile, Chief Minister Narendra Modi will be contesting from his traditional Maninagar seat in Ahmedabad.
