BJP govt in Orissa demanded prosecution of Naveen Patnaik over the multi-crore dal scam.

Bhubaneswar: In a fresh salvo against BJD government in Orissa over the multi-crore dal scam, BJP today demanded prosecution of Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik and others alleging they had played with the lives of about one

crore children and pregnant women.

"BJP will soon take steps for initiating criminal proceedings against the chief minister and others involved in the dal scam and seek the Governor's sanction to prosecute them," party National Secretary Kirit Somaiya told reporters

here.

Terming irregularities in purchase of dal for mid-day meal (MDM) scheme and supplementary nutrition programme (SNP) as the "worst scam of 2010", Somaiya said the resignation of Pramila Mallick as Women and Child Development

Minister over the scandal was not enough.

"We wonder as to why police have not yet taken proper note of the scam which involves criminal conspiracy. Though state vigilance department has detected irregularities, none has been booked so far," he said after the BJP team visited

several areas for an on-the-spot study about dal scam.

Besides taking up the matter with the police, BJP would approach the Governor for his sanction to prosecute the chief minister, ministers and officials for illegal acts and criminal breach of trust, Somaiya said.

As the scam "grossly violated the human rights of about one crore beneficiaries of MDM and SNP", BJP would also approach the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) for initiating appropriate action in the matter, he said. "NHRC should also take cognizance of the issue suo motu and act," he said. He said the chief minister should tender apology and ensure complete health check up of all beneficiaries of MDM and SNP within a month.
