New Delhi: Chief Election Commissioner Achal Kumar Jyoti on Friday sent the names of 20 Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) MLAs to the President, recommending their disqualification from the Delhi Legislative Assembly for holding ‘Office of Profit’. This is the latest crisis facing the AAP, which came to power in Delhi three years ago after winning an overwhelming majority by grabbing 67 seats in the 70-member House.
Several big names feature in the list of AAP MLAs facing disqualification, including Kailash Gahlot, Delhi cabinet minister and close confidant of Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal. Gahlot, the MLA from Najafgarh, is the Transport Minister in the Kejriwal cabinet and his potential disqualification comes at a time the national capital is expanding public transport facilities in the city.
The other big names in the list are Chandni Chowk MLA Alka Lamba and Dwarka MLA Adarsh Shastri, both of whom have been with Kejriwal since the days of Anna Hazare’s 2011 India Against Corruption (IAC) movement. Laxmi Nagar MLA Nitin Tyagi, who is considered close to Deputy CM Manish Sisodia and defeated Congress stalwart AK Walia in 2015, also features in the list. If the disqualification comes to pass, AAP’s prominent Poorvanchali leader Sanjeev Jha will also end up losing his seat.
