Ralegan Siddhi: Anna Hazare, fasting for the last five days for passage of Lokpal Bill, on Saturday wrote a letter to Samajwadi Party chief Mulayam Singh Yadav requesting his support for Lokpal Bill in Parliament.
Samajwadi Party has been opposing the Bill saying that it will go to any extent "any extent" in Parliament for blocking the anti-corruption legislation.
The Congress and the BJP have already made it clear that they will back the Bill in its current form. BJP leader Arun Jaitley has went on to say that his party will not initiate discussions on the issue.
Congress on Saturday expressed its firm support for the Lokpal Bill saying that it is committed in the fight against corruption. "The Congress party fully supports the Lokpal Bill. We have a strong Bill on which we have consensus," said Congress Vice President Rahul Gandhi who was flanked by senior ministers P Chidambaram and Kapil Sibal while addressing media on Lokpal bill.
Speaking on the progress of the Lokpal Bill, which has been tabled in the Rajya Sabha but is yet to be passed, the Congress leader said, "We are 99 per cent there. If we get the support of political parties we can pass this Bill. Lokpal is a matter of national importance, we need other parties' help."
Rahul's reference was on Congress's key ally Samajwadi Party's open rejection of the Bill. Samajwadi Party MPs had entered the well of the House as soon as Rajya Sabha Chairperson asked V Narayanasamy to initiate discussion on the Lokpal Bill. So far, the Lokpal Bill has the support of the BJP and BSP.
