Even though Punjab Assembly elections are several months away, the Congress chief ministerial candidate Captain Amarinder Singh is out campaigning with full force.
Amarinder on Sunday sounded the poll bugle as he kickstarted his outreach campaign 'Halke Vich Captain' from Deputy CM Sukhbir Singh Badal’s constituency Jalalabad. The party has adopted the slogan 'Chaunda Hai Punjab Captain Di Sarkar' (Punjab wants Captain's government).
The campaign strategised by Prashant Kishor's Indian Political Action Committee (IPAC) aims to take Amarinder to every Assembly constituency (Halka) in the state to establish a direct contact with the voters.
Congress leaders claim more than 3000 people gathered in Jalalabad to share their problems with Amarinder.
Amarinder also held a two-hour long interaction with the local residents at ‘Lokan Da Durbar’ (people's court) where he promised to set up a task force within 100 days once the Congress forms the after the elections in early 2017.
“I have come here today to hear your problems, to discuss the issues you face. I request you all to share with me your problems and I will look into them. I will set up a taskforce within the first 100 days of my government being elected to resolve your issues," he announced at the meeting.
He also promised to outlaw dispossession and auctioning of farmer land citing the plight of residents of Pakkan village, where 57 farmers have allegedly committed suicide in the last six months due to rising debt.
Over 1500 local Congress workers were roped in and trained to spread the Captain's message across the constituency.
Several Congress leaders including Ajit Darshan, Sunil Jhakkar, Nath Ram, Simranjeet Singh, Puranjai Singh and Ruby Balkar Singh were present at the event.
Congress is aiming to oust the 10-year old Bharatiya Janata Party-Shiromani Akali Dal government from the state.
