AGP,BJP workers anxious despite alliance announcement
BJP and AGP workers in Assam have been expressing apprehensions.

Guwahati: The workers of both the BJP and AGP in Assam have been expressing apprehensions even though the seat-sharing was formally announced in New Delhi through a joint press conference at the BJP headquarters on Thursday.

The BJP office bearers of the Guwahati state office, though reluctant to speak to media persons, have gone off the record to express their distrust of the AGP which was bargaining very hard since past few days.

The BJP on Thursday announced an alliance with the Asom Gana Parishad (AGP) for the Lok Sabha elections in Assam. Of the 14 Lok Sabha seats in Assam, the AGP would contest six seats and the BJP would fight for eight, including Guwahati.

However, the BJP rank was not confident that the AGP will help them and transfer the party votes to the BJP. ''But we will extend all-out help to them,'' said an office bearer requesting anonymity.

In the Lok Sabha elections, the BJP would be the major partner, but in the Assembly elections in the state the AGP would be the senior partner as announced by BJP President Rajnath Singh.

The AGP has two seats in the present Lok Sabha. Assam goes to the polls in two phases on April 16 and 23. Though the BJP has announced an understanding, Assembly polls are not due yet.

The AGP leaders are expected to arrive later tonight and also expected to announce the four remaining candidates by the end of this week. The AGP is contesting in Dibrugarh, Lakhimpur, Barpeta, Tezpur, Kaliabor, and Kokrajhar.
