The Sri Lankan players refused to shake hands with the Bangladesh cricket team after getting knocked out of the ODI World Cup following a 3-wicket defeat on Sunday at Arun Jaitley Stadium. The match witnessed a major controversy with Angelo Mathews getting out in a bizarre way – ‘timed-out’. The former Sri Lanka batter didn’t get ready in the regulated time – 2 minutes after coming in the middle as the opposition skipper Shakib Al Hasan for the timed-out dismissal which was upheld by the on-field umpire.
Following the Bangladesh appeal, the umpires held a lengthy discussion with the players including Mathews.
They ruled Mathews to be out and the 36-year-old veteran reluctantly trudged off with most spectators appearing bemused by the decision.
During Bangladesh’s chase, the two teams also had a couple of heated moments as Mathews’ dismissal bemused the Sri Lankan players.
Mathews himself gave a send-off to Shakib after getting him out for 82. He pointed at his wrist referring to time with a smile on his face.
The fans on X, formerly known as Twitter, reacted to Sri Lanka players not shaking hands with the Bangladesh players after the match.

Meanwhile, chasing 280 for victory, Bangladesh rode on a 169-run stand between Najmul Hasan Shanto (90) and skipper Shakib Al Hasan (82) to reach their target with three wickets and 53 balls to spare.
The result sealed Sri Lanka’s exit from the semi-final race but Mathews’ dismissal overshadowed the result after he was adjudged “timed out” for taking longer than the regulation two minutes to take strike when he arrived at the crease to bat.
