The India-Pakistan rivalry has over time become one of the most fiercest and heated rivalries in cricket and sport in general. Especially when there’s much at stake except for just bragging rights, the intensity reaches a fever-high.
But, former Indian cricketer Gautam Gambhir believes that India currently reigns supreme over their neighbours and is in fact “far superior” in comparison to Pakistan, thereby causing an imbalance in the heated rivalry.
“Pakistan has dominated India a lot of times. Currently, if you see the level of both teams, India is far superior to Pakistan in all three formats. If Pakistan defeats India it’s an upset, if India defeats Pakistan, it’s very much given,” Gambhir said on Star Sports.
Gambhir is of the belief that when it boils down to just mere cricketing rivalry, India’s real opponents are not Pakistan, who have never beaten India in the ICC ODI World Cup in their eight meetings and have only won once in their seven encounters in the T20 World Cup.
Instead, Gambhir said that the true rivals are the current world champions, who defeated India in the final after India’s undefeated run to the finale of the ICC Cricket World Cup, Australia.
“India and Australia, from a cricketing point of view, is a top rivalry. If you ask a cricket fan what is the actual rivalry, they will also say India and Australia,” Gambhir added.
Gambhir is no stranger to controversies. Gambhir is well known for his fiery comments and straightforward analysis which sometimes lands Gambhir in hot water and makes him the talk of the town. But, the former batter seemed completely unfazed by this phenomenon and said that he will continue to speak his mind regardless of the consequence.
During a recent Q&A session on X (formerly Twitter), a fan ended up asking Gambhir why he makes such ‘controversial statements’.
“Why you always give so much controversial statements? #AskGG,” he posted. In response, Gambhir came up with his blunt style of answering.
“I say what I feel. You should think who benefits from the controversies!,” he remarked.
