ICC World Cup 2023 Semifinals Race: India Trail New Zealand, South Africa Boost NRR; England Tumble
ICC World Cup 2023 points table: New Zealand top, India second, South Africa remain third, Australia in fourth place while England slipped to ninth.

It was a dramatic double-header day on Saturday at the ICC ODI World Cup 2023. Sri Lanka finally picked up their first win of the tournament to get off the mark in the ODI World Cup points table, while defending champions England’s harrowing 229-run loss to South Africa saw Jos Buttler’s side slip to ninth place.

Two action-packed games unfolded on October 21 as Sri Lanka beat Netherlands by 5 wickets in Lucknow to pick up their first points on the board. Kusal Mendis’ side rose to eighth place in the points table following their maiden win, whereas South Africa remain third despite their win over England, but the Proteas saw their Net Run Rate sky-rocket to +2.212.

New Zealand continue to sit pretty atop the ODI World Cup 2023 points table with 8 points from four games. India are in second place having won all of their four games as well, but trail the Kiwis on NRR ahead of their meeting on Sunday.

The two unbeaten teams in the tournament so far will lock horns in Dharamsala on October 22, but before that the Black Caps remain top with courtesy of superior NRR of +1.923.

India are in second place due to their inferior NRR of +1.659, while the Proteas remain in third place. Following their clinical 69-run win over Pakistan, Australia occupy the final spot for the semifinals with four points from as many games along with a NRR -0.193.

Babar Azam-led Pak slipped to fifth place after their second consecutive loss, the Green Army also have four points from as many games, but trail Australia on an inferior NRR of -0.456.

Bangladesh meanwhile have dropped to sixth place in the points table after their 7-wicket defeat to India. The Bangla Tigers only have two points so far, but have the highest NRR of -0.784 among all teams below them.

Netherlands remain ahead of Sri Lanka, despite their defeat on Saturday, thanks to their superior NRR of -0.790, while the Lankan Lions still have plenty of work to do, and their NRR of -1.048 must be rectified if they hope to make it into the semifinals.

England meanwhile slipped to ninth place, the defending champions have now lost two games in a row, and with just a solitary win in the bag, their NRR of -1.248 also took a hit after their crushing defeat to South Africa.

Afghanistan are sitting at the rock bottom of the points table with a solitary win and a NRR of -1.250.
