Ahead of the festival season, the Delhi government has imposed a complete ban on the sale, purchase, and use of all types of firecrackers, including green crackers citing air pollution in the national capital. The move is part of Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) government’s ‘winter action plan’, said Environment Minister Gopal Rai on Monday.
“We all know that the pollution level increases in Delhi during the winter. To tackle this, the Delhi government has started working on the winter action plan. Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal has also decided to implement a complete ban on all kinds of crackers in the city,” Rai said.
As per the order, the Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal-led government has taken the decision to ban the production, storage, sale (including online sale), and bursting of crackers.
Rai has also asked Delhi police not to allow licenses for the same.
The air quality in Delhi and neighbouring areas starts worsening in October due to unfavourable meteorological factors such as low temperatures and wind speed, which do not allow dispersion of pollutants.
To combat this, the Delhi government has been imposing a complete ban on firecrackers in the city for the past two years.
As per last year’s order, bursting crackers in Delhi, while the ban is imposed, can lead to a jail term of up to six months and a fine of Rs 200.
Along with this, the production, storage, and sale of firecrackers in the capital could attract a fine of up to Rs 5,000 and imprisonment for three years under Section 9B of the Explosives Act.
