Animal: Anurag Kashyap FEELS Ranbir Kapoor's Film Taught Feminism To People, Says 'It Is Doing Something Good'
Anurag Kashyap got candid about Ranbir Kapoor's film Animal and the controversies surrounding it.

Ranbir Kapoor is basking under the success of his recently released film Animal. The emotional and action drama has been creating new records with each passing day. It has already been counted as one of the highest-grossing films of the year. Well, as Ranbir gets appreciation from all corners, Anurag Kashyap has addressed the controversies surrounding the film pertaining to people calling it ‘misogynistic’ and glorification of ‘toxic masculinity’.

Sharing his thoughts on the film during a conversation with OTT Play at the Kolkata International Film Festival, Anurag Kashyap explained why he thinks that people learnt more about feminism because of Animal. He stated, “You cannot force responsibility on anyone. People take responsibility for themselves or they don’t. How many people went and watched a film that you considered to be feminist? Only a handful of people watch them and underline if it was a real feminist film or a pseudo-feminist film. A film like Animal has galvanised more feminists in this country than any other feminist film. It has created more discussion around misogyny than any other film. So it is doing something good.”

He added, “You need a provocateur in a society for people to understand. More people were taught feminism because of Animal and the discussions around it. Why are you scared of a provocateur? We are educated and learned people. Why are we afraid of someone who provokes us? I think being provoked is a good thing. I have always tried to make films to make people uncomfortable, as a filmmaker. When I made Ugly, I wanted people to go back and not sleep that night.”

Despite facing criticism, Ranbir Kapoor’s film Animal continues to have a successful run at the box office. It had a strong first weekend, and even in its second weekend, it’s still making a lot of money. On the second Saturday, Animal earned Rs 34.74 crore in India, bringing its total earnings in the country to Rs 395.27 crore. Worldwide, the movie has made over Rs 600 crore, according to the production company, T-Series.

Sandeep Reddy Vanga’s directorial is about the troubled relationship between Rannvijay (played by Ranbir) and his dad Balbir Singh (played by Anil Kapoor). The film also stars Bobby Deol and Rashmika Mandanna in important roles.
