Directed by Carlos Saldanha, the film follows the storyline of Crockett Johnson’s 1955 book of the same name. The beloved characters from the classic children’s book will come to life with boundless adventures.

Announcing the release date on their official handle, Sony Pictures India shared the poster of the film with the caption, “Unlock the power of imagination with Harold and the Purple Crayon. Exclusively in cinemas August 15th.” Crockett Johnson wrote and illustrated the classic book, which revolves around youngster Harold and his magical purple crayon. Whatever Harold creates with this crayon comes to life. Zachary Levi appears as the older Harold in the film.

According to the trailer, the film revolves around Harold’s journey into the actual world using his magical crayon. He creates aircraft, skateboards and monsters. When Harold’s crayon slips into the wrong hands, he and his friends must save both worlds from destruction.

Talking about the movie and his character, Zachary Levi told People, “What was most fun was getting to fully commit to playing a character with that level of optimism and imagination oozing from his pores. Harold is nothing but light, and I love that. The best thing about any cast and crew are the organic, genuine moments of human interaction that you get to have all day long.”

The feature film adaptation of Harold and the Purple Crayon began filming in early 2022. However, the film experienced several delays. Reportedly, the film was originally scheduled for release in January 2023, but was pushed back and is finally releasing in August 2024. Apart from Zachary Levi, the film features an ensemble cast including Lil Rel Howery as Moose, Benjamin Bottani as Mel, Zooey Deschanel as Harold’s co-worker, Jemaine Clement as Gary and Tanya Reynolds as Porcupine. Alfred Molina serves as the narrator of the film.

Previously, Harold and the Purple Crayon was adapted into several animated short films over the years, including 1959, 1971 and 1974. HBO produced a 13-episode television series based on the series’ books in 2001. Sharon Stone narrated the series and Connor Matheus lent the voice of Harold. The HBO series received a Daytime Emmy Award for Main Title Design.
