London: Revolving around the life of Caitlyn Jenner, ‘I am Cait’ is more than a reality show which has hit the western small screen lately. The show chronicling the life of Caitlyn, former Olympian athlete Bruce Jenner who revealed the transformed self as Caitlyn, is educating the masses about the lesser known facts of Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transsexual (LGBT) community. The show which has right amount of ingredients of a reality show and documentary has been a revelation on the small screen, as it narrates the real emotions of transgender community.

Reality shows in India too have dabbled with the cause of transgender community, but, none of it could send across the message so clearly to the audience. Each year, 'Bigg Boss' has included contestants from LGBT community, the ideas clearly was to sensitise the audience. Contestants such as Laxmi Tripathi, Bobby Darling, fashion designer Rohit Varma and former Mr Gay Sushant Divgikar and Pakistani anchor Begum Nawajish Ali were part of the controversial reality show. Known for sensational content, 'Bigg Boss' never really elaborated on the life of the LGBT community; it was rather meant to offer a distinct flavour to the show. These contestants never became hugely popular as Indian audience found difficulty in accepting them instantly.

Few episodes aired on E! network ‘I am Cait’ has been well received by the audience who have associated with the rights of homosexual community. Kim Kardashian, step daughter of Jenner and her other children have been making fleeting appearances in the show. The ones to be disappointed by ‘I am Cait’, are the ones who tried to compare the show with ‘Keeping Up With The Kardashians’ and expected similar antics as pulled up by model and reality show star Kim and her sisters.

Without being over dramatic, Caitlyn has rationally tried to elaborate the angst and the painful realities associated with transgender people. The episodes captured Caitlyn’s transition of living as a woman. She has been exploring feminity, revealing her stunning looks in a swimming costume, and partying with other transgender women. Real life stories narrating miseries and tortures meted out to homosexual people in school, workplace and family, can be moving for the audience.

Caitlyn also deals with the turmoil faced by her family. While her daughter Kylie, doesn’t really have a problem with Caitlyn, but, her mother Esther seems to be still in search of Bruce in her. “He’s still Bruce, I love him a lot,” said Esther in an episode, trying to come in terms with the changing personalities. Esther reveals the trouble that the families have in coming in terms with the truth related to the sexual preferences of their children.

It’s time that Indian television to muster up courage to air a hard hitting show that depicts the real picture about the LGBT community.
