Director and writer Sreejith Edavana’s film CICADA will be released at the cinemas on August 9 in Telugu, Kannada, Tamil and Malayalam. Many Malayalam filmmakers have postponed their films in the wake of the devastating landslides in Wayanad. The director Sreejith has decided against it and will release the film on the decided date. He has explained the reason behind this decision in an Instagram post. The filmmaker said, “Dear ones, we know that none of us is free from the pain that Wayanad is going through. While the whole world stands with Wayanad, we are also trying to help the poor through the Chief Minister’s Relief Fund.” Sreejith then said that his film CICADA will be released this Friday itself.

According to him, the film’s release date will not be postponed because he wants to give a large share of the proceeds of this film to Wayanad’s victims. The director said that it is better to release the film on August 9 itself to make the monetary help for the victims available as soon as possible. Sreejith concluded the statement by hoping that this decision taken by them would have the full support of the audience.

CICADA will mark Sreejith’s directorial debut in the cinema. Apart from being a filmmaker, he is also a composer. He may not be a prominent name, but his compositions have struck a chord with the audience. He rose to prominence with his first album, Nenjodu Cherthu and has been making hit music albums since. He talked about more in the Onmanorama portal. When asked about his interest in music direction, Sreejith said that Hindi songs have been his favourite since a young age. He was inspired by AR Rahman. He recalled starting a musical band in college but it couldn’t do well. However, he still made his entry into the music world, through his friend Anil who had some connections in the films and mini screen. He has also completed an audio-engineering course from Chennai.
