His close association with the late Tamil Nadu CM Jayalalithaa is well-known, with Jayalalithaa once revealing that she had watched his film Muthal Mariyathai a remarkable 15 times.
Muthal Mariyathai, directed and produced by Bharathiraja, premiered on August 15, 1985. The film starred legendary actors Sivaji Ganesan and Radha in pivotal roles, alongside Vadivukkarasi, Deepan, Ranjini and others. Produced under the banner of Manoj Creations, the movie boasted a soulful soundtrack composed by Ilaiyaraaja and captured on camera by cinematographer B Kannan, with editing by V Rajagopal and P Mohan Raj. Upon its release, Muthal Mariyathai emerged as a silver jubilee hit, captivating audiences for over 200 days in theatres.
Despite numerous invitations to enter politics, Bharathiraja has consistently declined, expressing his desire to be remembered solely as a respected artist. He firmly stated, “I have left the town as an artist and when I go, my body should go only with the name of a good artiste.”
Meendum Oru Mariyathai, released in 2020, marked Bharathiraja’s final directorial venture, where he also played the lead role and served as the producer. Throughout his illustrious career, Bharathiraja’s commitment to artistic integrity and storytelling excellence has left an indelible mark on the Indian film landscape.
